We know that Aurifil 50wt is a go-to for many thanks to its thin, strong versatility. But, what about 40wt? Have you tried this slightly heavier weight thread? We love it for machine quilting and apparel construction, but have no doubt that many of you have tested it for other applications or have other ideas for how it might be used.

Today, we’re continuing our thread education -  to arm you with the tools needed to continue to inspire your customers. It’s all about making, creating, experimenting, and finding our creative happy place, and we’re here to support you along the way!

Today, we’ll focus on Aurifil 40wt. Wound on a green spool, our 40wt thread is perfect for use with sewing bags, toys or dolls, garments, or when a more defined topstitching or quilting pattern is desired. It is also terrific for Single, Double or Triple Strand Cross Stitch, Fiber Art, Thread Painting, Hand Piecing, Bobbin and Machine Lace, Machine Applique, Machine Embroidery, Edge-to-Edge, Pantograph, and Custom Longarm or Domestic Machine Quilting.
It comes in all 270 colours on three different sized spools:

Bobbin:
For best results when using 40wt thread by machine, we recommend using Aurifil 50wt in the bobbin. It’s the perfect thread partner, but is also incredibly economical as more thread will fit on the bobbin. Longarmers should use 40wt in the bobbin and go a little slower than normal when quilting, particularly when creating curves.

Needle:
It is best to use a 80/12 or 90/14 Topstitch, Quilting or Denim needle when using this thread by machine. We recommend a 3.0 needle size or larger for longarm quilters. Our test groups have found that using a MR (multidirectional) needle helps to reduce breakage when using 2ply threads on the longarm.
